DR. JOSE DALISAY, JR.
Jose Rizal Lecturer, Philippine PEN Congress 2024
Dr. Jose “Butch” Y. Dalisay, Jr. was a professor of English and creative writing at the University of the Philippines in Diliman until his retirement. He served as the Director of the UP Institute of Creative Writing, chairman of the English Department, and the Vice President for Public Affairs of the UP System (2003-2005). He has published more than 30 books of fiction and nonfiction including several plays and screenplays. Six of his books have received the National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board. Soledad’s Sister was on the shortlist of the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize. His literary honors and distinctions include the Don Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature, the Cultural Center of the Philippines Centennial Honors, CCP Awards for Playwriting, FAMAS, Urian, Star and Catholic Film Awards. He received international fellowships and grants such as the Fulbright, Rockefeller Foundation, British Council, David T.K. Wong, Hawthornden Castle and Civitella Ranieri Foundation. He also garnered the Premio Cervara di Roma in Italy (2005). He writes a column for Philippine Star.
